Our trip started out as a bumpy ride down a beautiful, scenic route to Purulia from Kolkata. Through big fields of mustard and small red-brick roads. We left behind Kolkata’s large buildings, and Purulia’s beauty opened up like a postcard. When we finally arrived at our homestay in Purulia, we stepped back in time.

Our homestay, located amid palm trees, was alive with balconies overlooking nature. We received warm welcomes from our hosts. Each guestroom blended contemporary amenities with traditional designs; rugs, mosquito nets covering queen-sized mattresses, and bathtubs complete with hot water systems.
In the evenings, we relaxed while drinking chai and watching the sunset turn the sky shades of orange. This brought sheer happiness compared to bland one-room hotel accommodations.
Authentic Bengali Meals
The food served here is like poetry. At first, for breakfast, we were served luchi (fluffy deep-fried flat bread) and aloo dum (spicy potato curry). Then, lunch consisted of ilish maach bhaja (golden fried hilsa fish) served with bharta (smoked eggplant) and fresh garden dal. Finally, dinner was served by candlelight: shorshe ilish (hilsa in mustard sauce) and mishti doi (sweetened yogurt).
The hosts of our eco resort in Purulia insisted that we learn how to prepare the various dishes and provided us with their recipes. Each mouthful was a unique explosion of flavor, unlike anything we have experienced before.
Exploring Nearby Villages
Riding rented bicycles through multiple villages brought us through an area with opportunities for us to start a relationship with a Santhal tribe. So, they demonstrated how to create bamboo crafts and told us stories about the spirits of the forest. From our homestay in Purulia, we visited the local market (Haat), bargaining for goods.
Many small and older children waved at us. I could hear their laughter. This experience gave me a glimpse into Purulia’s indigenous culture, filled with traditional dance, music, and culture that has been preserved over many years during this time of change.
Sunset Adventures Amidst Terracotta Temples
Purulia’s iconic temples are a must-see when visiting the region. During our visit, we arrived just before sunset at Baranti to view the plantation, with its cued red roof structure and hill backgrounds.
As the sun set, shadows moved softly across the temple’s ancient stone walls with an aura of timeless spirituality. We had packed picnic-style parathas as part of our picnic experience in Purulia, and the experience of eating while sitting among the ancient temples allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the adventure. As well as providing the feeling of having been transported back in time.
We Shared Bonfires & Stories
The nights in our homestay in Purulia were magical. Locals and guests were drawn to the warmth of a crackling bonfire. The host told ghost stories from the folklore of Purulia while people played guitars and sang folk songs. We lay on blankets looking up at the Milky Way and saw stars that shone as bright as diamonds without any pollution. Laughter mixed with the sound of crickets created a genuine connection.
